The Aghori (Part 2): The Crude Technology of the Aghori Path – A Warning and a Deeper Look

As we continue our look into the world of the Aghori Path, we have studied its beginnings, non-duality (Advaita), sacred cremation grounds, and the hidden meanings of Panchamakara. How do wise yogis and modern spiritual teachers see the strong, raw parts of this path?

In a talk about the workings of mysticism, spiritual teacher Sadhguru describes the Aghori tradition not just as a religious path but as an old, yet very intense spiritual method.

1. Aghori as a "Crude Technology": Digging for Water with Bare Hands

Sadhguru gives an example to explain the nature of secret paths like Aghori. Imagine trying to find water: You could use modern, advanced tools or drilling machines. You could decide to dig a well with your bare hands.

The Aghori path is like digging with hands. It works. It is rough, hard, and needs complete determination. By the time you find the water, your skin may be. Your hands may be worn down to the bone. It is an extreme way: out of a thousand who try it seriously, only a few make it through, while many risk breaking mentally or getting lost along the way.

2. Befriending the Abhorrent: Destroying Likes and Dislikes

At the center of the Aghori practice is the breaking of human conditioning—especially the idea of preference.

People always separate existence into what they like and what they hate, what is clean and what is unpleasant.

The Aghori directly faces what society finds disgusting—such as working with the quiet energies of cremation grounds (Smashan) and dealing with bodies that have just left this life, where life force (Prana) is changing—to completely get rid of disgust and preference.

By treating dirt and gold, a body and a king, with the same attitude, the practitioner makes the mind stop dividing the world, getting closer to freedom without limits.

3. The Warning: Power vs. Pure Liberation

Although the path can be a spiritual way for rare, very focused people, Sadhguru warns that many who join these paths do so for power (Siddhis) or control over others rather than true freedom. Because the work with raw life forces and total mental strength is so difficult, it is clearly a path for the few, not for the general people.

Respecting the Mystery

The Aghori tradition is still an edge in the world of human spirituality. It shows us that breaking through the ideas of the mind requires giving up every safe place we hold on to. Whether seen through traditions, video stories, or yoga analysis, the path of the Aghori asks us to look past fear and see the universe as one whole.

What do you think?

Does thinking of the Aghori path as a raw "spiritual technology" change your view on why these strong practices are there?
