The Origins of Witchcraft: A Biblical and Historical Perspective

Witchcraft remains one of the most misunderstood and controversial topics in history. Witchcraft is not an invention or a simple medieval superstition. Witchcraft has been part of life since the earliest records, and the Bible even mentions witchcraft. In a world where many people look to occult practices for answers, understanding the origins and nature of witchcraft is essential, especially from a faith‑based perspective. This guide explores the historical and cultural roots of witchcraft, its evolution, and its implications for contemporary society.

What Is Witchcraft? A Biblical Definition

The Bible does not treat witchcraft as a myth. The Bible treats witchcraft as a dangerous practice that God strictly condemns. Key Hebrew words such as "keshep" (sorcery or enchantment), "kezem" (divination), and "nahas" (omen) show how wide the range of occult practices that the Bible forbids is. The New Testament uses the word "pharmakeia." That word originally meant the use of potions and drugs in rituals. It also means deception and rebellion against God (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 21:8).

The Spiritual Roots: Why Does Humanity Gravitate Toward Witchcraft?

Scripture and theology reveal five core roots of witchcraft. First, Broken Communion with God. After the fall, humanity’s longing for eternity often seeks substitutes for communion with God. Second: Desire for Power and Control. The Eden temptation, "you will be like God," still echoes in humanity’s desire to manipulate realities independently of God. Third, Fear of the Unknown. Witchcraft often comes from the need to control or predict the future, which leads people to rely on spells, omens, and amulets. Fourth, Rebellion Against Divine Authority. At its core, witchcraft is a declaration of independence. A refusal to submit to God’s will and order. Fifth, Manipulation and Domination. Beyond rituals, the manipulation of others for personal gain is the first fleshly level of witchcraft. The second darker level involves pacts with demonic powers.

Witchcraft Before Civilization: The Era

Witchcraft before civilization. The Bible suggests that witchcraft began before civilizations. Genesis 6:5 describes a pre‑flood humanity whose hearts were always inclined toward evil, including manipulation and sorcery. Ancient rabbinic texts confirm that forbidden spiritual practices were rampant in the earliest generations.

Witchcraft in Ancient Civilizations

Babylon

Witchcraft became a system in Babylon. Diviners, exorcists, and healers wielded both science and magic. Rituals, spells, and omens governed agriculture, medicine, law, and even politics. Babylon’s society was saturated with occult practices, making witchcraft the operating system of civilization.

Egypt

EGYPT. In Egypt, magic (Hekka) was seen as the force that maintained the universe and legitimized the Pharaoh’s rule. Priests were trained in arts and spells were central to medicine, funerals, and warfare. The confrontation between Moses and the Pharaoh’s magicians (Exodus) illustrates the reality and limits of occult power versus authority.

Rome

GREECE AND ROME. Greek "pharmakeia". Roman magical traditions integrated sorcery into medicine, religion, and daily life. From religious mysteries to curse tablets and astrological consultations, the Greco‑Roman world refined and democratized occult practices. Biblical writers often warned Christians about these pervasive influences.

Witchcraft in Modern Times: A Global Phenomenon

Today witchcraft is not confined to the past or to a culture. African traditions, syncretic religions (Voodoo, Santería), Amazonian shamanism, and modern Neo‑Paganism (Wicca) all reflect the ongoing human desire to manipulate spiritual realities. In Asia, practices such as Feng Shui and astrology are widespread. Research shows that the impulse behind witchcraft is universal: the search for power, protection, and control beyond God’s boundaries.

Prophetic Warnings: Witchcraft in the End Times

According to the Book of Revelation and several biblical prophets, witchcraft will play a role in the end times. Witchcraft will permeate politics, economics, and religion. The Antichrist’s system is depicted as one that deceives nations through manipulation and rebellion against God’s truth (Revelation 18:23).

The Christian Response: Discernment and Faith

The Bible calls believers to reject witchcraft and to actively resist its influence through faith and the Holy Spirit. Biblical heroes such as Moses, Daniel, and Paul confronted occult powers with God’s truth. The church’s mission is to discern, expose, and overcome deception, holding fast to the supremacy of Christ.

Witchcraft, as revealed in Scripture and history, is more than superstition. Witchcraft is a rebellion that has shaped—and still shapes—cultures, societies, and individual lives. Understanding witchcraft’s beginnings and the dangers it brings allows believers to stay alert and stay rooted in faith and trust that God will triumph over every act of darkness.
